Napoleon Coste – Op. 48 / 49

Napoléon Coste’s Opus 48 and Opus 49 are significant collections for classical guitar from the Romantic era. They are frequently published together under the title “Quatre Marches et Six Préludes.”

Op. 48: Quatre Marches (Four Marches)

This collection consists of four character pieces that reflect Coste’s preference for rhythmic precision and heroic themes.

  • Character: Festive, rhythmic, and often majestic.
  • Style: Representative of the 19th-century French guitar school.
  • Key Feature: These pieces utilize the full range of the guitar and require very clean articulation.

Op. 49: Six Préludes (Six Preludes)

These six preludes are considered highly valuable for both pedagogical purposes and musical expression.

  • Difficulty: Intermediate to advanced.
  • Content: Short pieces focusing on various technical aspects like arpeggios, slurs, and position shifts.
  • Tone: Ranges from melancholic-romantic to virtuosic.
  • Resources: Free sheet music is available in archives such as IMSLP.

Napoléon Coste (1805–1883) was one of the most prominent guitarists in Paris during his time. He was a student of Fernando Sor and famously played the 7-string guitar (Heptachord). His works blend classical structure with the emotional depth of the Romantic period.
