John Dowland (1563–1626)
John Dowland was the most celebrated English composer, lutenist, and singer of the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. A master of the “English Lute School,” his profound and often melancholic music achieved international fame during his lifetime and remains a cornerstone of the plucked-string repertoire today.

- International Career: Early in his life, he traveled extensively, serving at the French court and later as a lutenist to King Christian IV of Denmark, where he earned one of the highest salaries of any court musician.
- The Royal Dream: For much of his career, Dowland felt slighted by the English court, possibly due to his Catholic faith. However, in 1612, he finally attained his lifelong goal: the position of King’s Lutenist under James I.
