Alfonso Broqua

Alfonso Broqua (born September 11, 1876 in Montevideo; died November 24, 1946 in Paris) was a Uruguayan composer.

Broqua studied under Vincent d’Indy at the Schola Cantorum in Paris and under César Franck in Brussels. He worked as a music teacher in Montevideo and later lived as a freelance composer in Paris. In addition to two operas and a cantata, he mainly composed songs and piano pieces, which were stylistically influenced by d’Indy. Broqua is considered the founder of Uruguay’s independent musical development.
