The Renaissance has a lot to offer for the lute and guitar. Milan, Dowland, and many other composers are still very appealing today. I have experimented a lot with the tuning of the lute at that time. It is almost like that of the modern guitar. Only the G string is tuned a semitone lower (F sharp). And if you then also put a capo on the 3rd fret, the tuning is the same as that of a Renaissance lute.
