Michelangelo Galilei

Michelangelo Galilei (born December 18, 1575 in Florence; died January 3, 1631) was an Italian composer and lutenist of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. He was the younger brother of the famous astronomer Galileo Galilei.

He learned to play the lute at an early age. After his father’s death, he moved to Padua to live with his brother. With a brief interruption, Galilei lived in Poland until 1607. He then took a position with the court orchestra in Munich and lived there until his death. There is extensive correspondence between Michelangelo and his famous brother.

His first publication was Il primo libro d’intavolatura di liuto (Munich 1620) in tablature. This is the largest collection of his works.
