geboren1844 in Buenos Aires – gestorben 1914 in Buenos Aires
Argentinian guitarist and composer who was highly influential in his own country in his younger years and later throughout South America. His love belonged to the guitar, which he taught himself to play from an early age. By the age of 18, he was already very well known and his compositions could be heard throughout the country. In 1870, he became a guitar teacher and devoted himself exclusively to the guitar from then on. By 1890, his fame had spread beyond the borders of Argentina, and he became an honorary member of several
music academies and cultural centers in other countries. His music, some eighty-seven pieces including originals and transcriptions, is simple in harmonization, but many of them are timeless. Among the best and most frequently heard are “Un momento” (waltz), “La Ñatita,” “La Perezosa” (mazurkas for one and two guitars), and “Elvira” (waltz).
